Division of the Senior Vice-Principal

Major Projects

The Major Projects Group, headed by the Director, Major Projects, is responsible for the management, governance and reporting of the University’s Major Projects portfolio.  The Group, working closely with key stakeholders, service providers and members of the Senior Executive, coordinates the initial feasibility planning and business case development for major projects and assists with the project management and monitoring of projects subsequently approved for implementation.  The Group is also responsible for the coordination and preparation of the internal and where required the external reporting requirements of each major project.

Overview

Major Projects are activities which are not part of regular, ongoing operations within a budget division.   They involve projects with an estimated investment value of more than $50 million over a period of five years, or initiatives which involve third-party relationships or government and which have the potential to pose significant financial, legal or reputational risk.
The major projects are regularly monitored by the Major Projects Coordination Group (MPCG) which is responsible for strategy development in addition to portfolio management and monitoring of projects which meet the ‘major projects definition’.  Membership includes the CIO and Head of Infrastructure Planning Group, the Senior Vice-Principal, Director Major Projects, the Provost, the Chief Financial Officer, the Executive Director, Finance and Planning, the Director Office of the Vice-Chancellor, and academic sponsors for the major projects.

A framework for managing major projects at the University of Melbourne

The University has developed a framework for the planning, management and governance of major projects at the University.  The framework outlines a set of policy principles and guidelines on the planning, management and governance of major projects to ensure that they are managed optimally and do not expose the University to unnecessary risks.  For this purpose, major projects include major capital projects, IT projects and organisational restructuring and reform.
